How to Play Truth or Dare: Official Rules
These are the standard truth or dare rules used at parties worldwide. Pair with our Truth or Dare vs Never Have I Ever guide to pick the right game for your group.

Gather your group
Sit in a circle with 3–10 players. Truth or Dare works best in smaller groups where everyone feels comfortable. Agree on boundaries and a safe word before starting.

Pick who goes first
Choose a starting player at random—spin a bottle, draw straws, or let the host decide. Play moves clockwise unless you agree otherwise.

Ask truth or dare
The current player asks the person to their left: "Truth or dare?" They must pick one—no take-backs. The asker (or the group) delivers the prompt.

Complete or skip
Answer the truth honestly or complete the dare. Anyone can pass once per game with no penalty, or use a house rule like taking a drink instead.

Rotate and escalate
The person who just answered becomes the asker for the next round. Start with clean prompts and move to spicy or wild tiers as the group loosens up.

Answer honestly. No lying, no dodging—though anyone can pass once if the group agrees on a penalty.
Dare
Complete the challenge or take the penalty. Dares should be embarrassing or funny—not dangerous or non-consensual.
